Rumours of Facebook smartphone re-emerge

There are new rumours that Facebook is to build its own smartphone after it was revealed that the social network firm has hired more than half a dozen former Apple engineers.

The former Apple employees had worked on the creation of the iPhone but are now set to develop software and hardware for Mark Zuckerberg's firm, unnamed multiple sources told the New York Times.

It is thought that Facebook has been driven to building its own smartphone platform due to the proliferation of web users accessing the site through smartphones and tablets. This was cited in its regulatory filings for its recent flotation as one of the main threats that it is facing as there is currently no means of gathering any meaningful revenue from mobile app users.

“Mark [Zuckerberg] is worried that if he doesn’t create a mobile phone in the near future that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms,” a Facebook employee told the New York Times.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the firm stated that the business is working “across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufactures, OS providers and application developers”. However, the exact details of the potential smartphone development are likely to remain under wraps to protect the brand.
