Apps prove more popular than web on smartphones
Applications appear to be a more popular way of spending time on a smartphone than the web itself.
This is according to recent research from Nielsen Smartphone Analytics, which revealed that Android users spend around 56 minutes a day actively interacting with the web and apps on their phone. Of this, 67 per cent of the time is devoted to apps, compared to just 33 per cent of time spent on the web.
Meanwhile, the apps actually in use are very specific, with just ten Android programs accounting for 43 per cent of consumers' time. The top 50 apps take up 61 per cent of all time spent, while the remaining 249,950 plus apps have to compete for the remaining 39 per cent of users' attention.
The data is retrieved from on-device meters installed on thousands of iOS and Android smartphones, allowing Nielsen to carefully track people's behaviour for analysis.
The report follows news that Google has purchased Motorola's mobile department in a bid to secure of patents. This could help the internet giant to tackle the legal problems that have cropped up in relation to Google's Android system on other devices.
