New data-crunching app could cut smart phone bills
An new app could enable smart phone users to slash their bills by cutting their data usage.
The Onavo app compresses the data usage of other apps, meaning users could get two or three times as much data use from their existing plan. The app runs in the background on the smart phone and provides a monthly data usage report, which can alert users to which apps are gobbling up the most data.
The Onavo app, dubbed “the magical shrinking machine” by its creators, is currently only available free for iPhone 4 and 3GS, but will soon be launched for iPads and the Android market as well. The app only supports downloads at the moment but the next version will also support media streaming, the makers say.
Guy Rosen, Co-Founder and CEO of Onavo, said, “At home and abroad iPhone users must put up with capped or metred data plans. Travellers are hit the hardest, with data roaming costs effectively turning most smart phones into dumb phones.
“Onavo gives you the confidence to use your iPhone without being held back by data costs. It’s a no brainer – it simply saves you money. We believe Onavo will become a must-have travel and utility app for any iPhone user.”
