Mobile phones increasingly indispensable to British public

The mobile phone has become practically indispensable to British consumers, with 51 per cent of respondents in a new survey saying they never leave the house without it and 44 per cent admitting that they could not live without it.

The figures from the poll by BM Savings, the new personal finance subsidiary site of Birmingham Midshires, show that three-quarters of all people asked spent at least 30 minutes on their mobile phone every day. Around 26 per cent said they would be worried about missing a call if they did not have their phone on them.

The devices are making an increasing impact in older generations, with a third of people over 65 admitting to always having their phone on them and being unable to live without it.

John Bianco, head of savings products at Birmingham Midshires, said, "It's clear that most of us enjoy talking on the phone and find it useful for getting day to day jobs done quickly and efficiently."

Telephone banking proved to be one of the most popular advancements that has been enabled by mobile phone technology. More than half of people said that telephone banking was the most convenient way of managing their finances. A further 52 per cent said they liked the fact they could use telephone banking anywhere, while 38 per cent said they were too busy to go into a branch.
