O2 put cap on data in time for iPhone

The launch of the new iPhone later this month will also herald the introduction of a cap on unlimited data for O2 customers.

The phone company has just released data charges for its new smartphone line-up, which includes the much anticipated new Apple iPhone. Coinciding with the phone’s launch is O2’s decision to stop bundling unlimited data access with the smartphones it sells.

The data cap will come into effect on 24 June. From this date customers paying up to £35 per month will get a 500MB allowance rising to 750MB for those paying £45. A cap of 1GB will apply for those for those paying £60 per month.

Speaking about the new data cap, O2 insist the changes will not affect the majority of their customers, “up to 97 per cent of O2 smartphone customers would not need to buy additional data allowances, as the lowest bundle (500MB) provides at least 2.5 times the average O2 customer's current use,” said Ronan Dunne, O2 chief executive.

Customers already signed into a contract and those who take one out before 24 June will continue to receive 'unlimited' data access. After that date the option to buy additional data bolt-ons, which include 500MB for £5 or 1GB for £10, will be available.
