No cut and paste on Windows Phone 7

Microsoft has announced more details of its new Phone 7 operating system at the Mix10 developer conference. The news has not been warmly received by industry observers as the operating system will not have the functionality expected.

The software giant announced that its new operating system will not be able to handle full-multitasking on non-Microsoft applications – third party applications are to be sandboxed.

In addition, and what has created quite a furore in the industry, is the announcement that Windows Phone 7 will not have the ability to cut and paste. Microsoft claims that most Office users do not need the function, despite its availability on its mobile operating system for over seven years.

Industry observers are quick to point out that Apple users were unhappy about the lack of cut and paste function on the first generation iPhone but that this was recognised by Apple and subsequently added. They claim that Microsoft is making a critical error and that we will see a backtrack in a year or so.

Microsoft has said that phones using the new operating system will be available by the end of this year. It is likely that certain phones currently running Windows will be unable to upgrade to the new system.
