Nokia announces release of new Symbian OS version
A new fourth version of the Symbian operating system has been announced by handset manufacturer Nokia.
The operating system is being aimed at Android-powered smartphones including those by Research in Motion and Apple. Nokia submitted proposals for the creation of an advanced user interface last week. The plans were submitted to the Symbian Foundation, which is now assessing the proposals through an open assessment and critique process
The improvement that could be included in the new OS are autosave functions that will reduce the need for save commands and user prompts, a refreshed interface layout and a uniform look and feel to all the applications.
The cutting-edge new interface layout is reported to include four main icons: music, photos, applications and contacts. Then, users will be able to add shortcuts to other applications themselves making the use of the home page a truly customisable experience and potentially revolutionising what people expect from their operating systems.
ITPortal website says it hopes the update will mean the OS will become more popular with use in smartphones, rather than simply with basic mobile handsets.
The new version is expected by the end of the year.
