Washable and antimicrobial mobile phone to prevent superbug spread

This week's CES technology trade show in Las Vegas was the setting for the latest revelation in the mobile phone realm. The Seal Cell is a waterproof handset from Seal Shield LLC and is said to be the world's first "washable and antimicrobial" mobile phone.

Representatives for the brand say the handset was created to help reduce the risk of global cross contaminations, including H1N1, Norovirus and the "superbug" MRSA. According to their research, mobile phones carry 500 times more bacteria than the average toilet.

"The Seal Shield Seal Cell phone combines Seal Shield waterproof technology and Silver Seal technology for antimicrobial protection of the product, making it dishwasher safe and resistant to mould, mildew and odour-causing bacteria," they continue.

Pricing for the handset has not yet been released, though reports say it will commence shipping early this year. It features a 2.0 megapixel camera with video and torch light, background noise elimination, a walkie-talkie function, Bluetooth 2.0, GPS and a touch screen.

It doesn't, however, support 3G or have its own mobile app store, but it can handle two SIM cards and connect over quad-band GSM (as well as Bluetooth).
