US legislator calls for cell phones to carry warnings

The US state legislator for Maine has called for cell phones to carry health warnings, to increase awareness that high levels of usage can cause brain cancer.

Andrea Boland is to put her proposals down in 2010. In her bill she has cited several pieces of research that link cell phone use with brain cancer.

The bill calls for all manufacturers of cell phones to include warnings on their phones for certain users, such as pregnant women and children. The warnings will advise these users not to put the phones near certain areas of their bodies, including their heads.

Boland claims that the state’s cell phone users “do not know what the risks are.” When it comes to scientific opinion on whether phones are safe to use or not, the jury’s out. However, there have certainly been many studies that have found there is absolutely no link between cell hone use and any type of cancer.

The bill is to be presented despite the fact that the Federal Communications Commission says that all cell phones in the US are safe to use and has already set a specific ‘absorption’ rate for radiation.
