Swedish and Norwegian mobile phone owners get 4G first
Work has been completed on two fourth-generation (4G) mobile networks in Oslo and Stockholm, meaning Swedish and Norwegian mobile phone owners will be among the first to avail of the high-speed technology.
The Long Term Evolution – or LTE – networks will be around ten times as fast as 3G and provide coverage for around 400,000 mobile customers from early next year. Mobile phone firm TeliaSonera said that, while mobile handsets which support LTE are not expected on the market until mid to late 2010, customers will be able to connect to the networks using their laptop and a Samsung dongle.
There have been no hints from TeliaSonera as to the cost of connecting to the 4G networks, with customers being recruited at the moment to pilot them during the first three months of next year. It expects the boosted speed to enable more people to view high-definition TV and video on their laptop, as well as facilitating other applications requiring high transmission speeds – such as multi-player online gaming and web conferences.
According to TeliaSonera, Ericsson is the supplier of the Stockholm 4G network and Chinese firm Huawei supplies the Oslo network.
