Smartphone batteries cannot keep up with handset power
The current handset power of smartphones is growing at a faster rate than the devices' batteries can handle.
According to IMS Research, the resulting gap between available power and that which is required by handsets could leave consumers having to curb their "connected and mobile lifestyles".
"Consumers are doing more with their handsets than ever before," notes IMS Research analyst Chris Schreck.
"Mobile data and application use has skyrocketed in recent years."
He goes on to observe that the types of features currently included in handset designs – "not to mention those on the horizon" – require more power to operate than ever before.
"Faster processing speeds, higher data throughputs and more vivid displays all escalate a handset's power requirements."
The research group claims that, even with the most powerful battery available, many smartphones have a battery life of just six hours.
Consequences for the smartphone industry could include consumers backing away from features and apps they know will drain their battery, IMS adds.
Possible solutions range from new battery chemistries to new display technologies and more power-efficient silicon design, while power-saving tips for smartphone owners include turning off Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi when they are not in use.
