LG to launch Android smartphone
Electronics giant LG has confirmed it is to release an Android mobile phone by Christmas, the manufacturer's first device to use Google's open source operating system.
The LG-GW620 features a three-inch touchscreen and follows the launch of Motorola's first Android phone, as well as LG's announcement that it would be introducing three new Windows Mobile smartphones in the coming weeks.
Dr. Skott Ahn, president of LG Electronics, explained that the smartphone's slide-out keypad is intended to meet the growing needs of consumers who rely on their mobile phones "for more than just making calls".
"The LG-GW620 will appeal to first-time smartphone customers by offering a new and different kind of user experience," he continued.
"Our objective is to provide a wide selection of smartphones to satisfy the diverse preferences of today's consumers."
Last week, LG announced it was partnering with fashion label Twenty8Twelve to design a luxurious case for its new Chocolate mobile phone.
The label, run by film star Sienna Miller and her fashion designer sister Savannah, was described by Chang Ma, vice-president of marketing strategy for LG Electronics, as "the perfect partner" to highlight the new Chocolate's design qualities.
